自由是個人可體驗的--這是美國人的最高價值--「我」擁有自由和尊嚴，也擁有主人翁式的責任感。他們很留意培養一種高尚的自我觀（Identity）！

不過有人批評，一些美國人把這個偉大國家和神的國度混為一談了，好像愛國就是愛神的國。我不知道情況是否如此。有個Brandan Robertson特別撰文指出，神並沒有偏愛美國，基督的身體包含了世上的每個國家、族群。這個道理不是很明顯嗎？正如耶穌所說的：我的國不屬這世界；我的國若屬這世界，我的臣僕必要爭戰，使我不至於被交給猶太人。只是我的國不屬這世界。（約十八36）
